Without the appropriate biosecurity measures, highly contagious viruses can be transmitted between locations through vehicles entering and exiting the site, with contaminants spreading via the vehicle’s tyres and undercarriage.

The recent H7 Avian Influenza outbreak in Northern Victoria led businesses to seek solutions to mitigate the spread of the disease and prepare for its potential impact. The H7 Avian Influenza strain is a highly contagious infection of birds, transferred through saliva. Chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys are highly susceptible. If an outbreak occurs on a farm, it must be reported to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888. The latest updates and detailed information on Avian Flu can be found at Agriculture Victoria.

PR Water provided a customer with a pair of Truck Wheel Wash systems to assist with the decontamination process of exiting vehicles. These systems are an effective solution to assist with disease control and maintaining biosecurity efforts, cleaning contaminants from vehicles.

Truck Wheel Wash Unit Leaving PR Water Branch

How the TWW System Works:

PR Water’s Truck Wheel Wash is secured and placed onto a flat surface or installed in-ground for stability. If the unit is above ground, it is fitted with heavy duty ramps, automatic entry sensors and a water re-capturing system. As a vehicle approaches, the sensor is triggered to activate the water spray, beginning the initial clean of the decontamination process. The vehicle slowly drives over the unit, dirt and mud will be blasted from the wheels and underbody of the vehicle.

For this application, dirt, mud and feathers were removed in the initial clean. Once the truck passed over, citric acid was applied to break down the virus. The truck then passes over the second wheel wash unit for the final rinse, cleaning off the citric acid and any other remaining particles. Once the vehicle has passed through, it is then cleared to leave the site, mitigating the risk of the virus spreading.

  • Reducing Labour Time and Fatigue

Saving approximately 1.5 hours per truck, reducing staff fatigue and lowering overall labour costs.

  • Minimising the Risk of Avian Flu Spread

Lowering the chance of the the spread of the disease into nearby areas, through contaminated vehicles, improving overall biosecurity measures.

PR Water’s Truck Wheel Wash systems successfully assisted our client in minimising the impacts of the Avian Flu by mitigating the spread from site to site. We are committed to being proactive in helping the industrial and agricultural industries maintain the highest standards of biosecurity.
